In his last word, Ziza said that from June 10 he would begin a hunger strike and forbade force-feeding himself. The artist also demanded that he be deprived of Russian citizenship, which he received after the annexation of Crimea in 2014, and the release of all Ukrainian political prisoners from Russian prisons.

Ziza is accused of justifying terrorism (Part 2 of Article 205.2 of the Criminal Code), preparing to commit a terrorist attack (Part 1 of Article 30, Part 1 of Article 205 of the Criminal Code) and vandalism motivated by political hostility (Part 2 of Article 214 of the Criminal Code).

On the night of May 16, the artist doused the Yevpatoria city administration building with blue and yellow paints and threw a Molotov cocktail at it. The incendiary mixture went out and no fire occurred. On the same day, the Crimea 24 TV channel published a video with Ziza’s apology. In the recording, the detainee looks confused and very worried; his T-shirt is torn, but there are no visible signs of beatings.

In the spring of 2023, a Yevpatorian told “Crimea. Realii" from the pre-trial detention center that there were five such videos. The first one ended up in the media, the second one was added to the case file, and several more were rejected. They were filmed by FSB officers.

“First, they calmly ask you to say everything they need on camera. Then, when you refuse, they begin to convince you by threatening you. They first forced me to record one video, which they sent to some of their bosses for review. Then - something else, when he replied that somehow I did not repent very sincerely. <…> First I needed to apologize to the Russian army, then to Putin,” said the artist.

The fact that Ziza was arrested became known only four days after his detention - before that, acquaintances and human rights activists were not aware of the whereabouts of the Yevpatorian. In the summer, the artist was added to the list of extremists and terrorists.
