The ECHR awarded Navalny 40 thousand euros for the refusal of the Russian authorities to investigate his poisoning

The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that Russian authorities must pay politician Alexei Navalny 40,000 euros as compensation for refusing to investigate his poisoning.

The ECtHR considered that the Russian investigating authorities ignored the political motives of the assassination attempt on Navalny and did not respond to reports about the use of Novichok chemical warfare agent.

“Russia, as a party to the Chemical Weapons Convention, was required to criminally investigate any activity that violates the ban on chemical weapons. And also to initiate a criminal case to establish the origin of the prohibited substance and the persons guilty of the use of this substance by the applicant, ”the decision of the ECtHR says.

As a result, the court in Strasbourg came to the conclusion that Russia thus violated the second article of the Convention on Human Rights, which guarantees the right to life.

In their lawsuit, Navalny and his representatives demanded that 300,000 euros be paid to him as compensation for non-pecuniary damage, but the court considered this amount too high.

In September 2022, Russia finally withdrew from the jurisdiction of the ECtHR and probably will not comply with this decision.

In August 2020, Alexei Navalny became ill on board the plane on which he flew from Tomsk to Moscow. The plane was urgently landed in Omsk, and Navalny himself was hospitalized in a local hospital. A few days later, the authorities allowed Navalny, who was currently in a coma, to be handed over to a team of German doctors who took him to a Berlin clinic on a special plane. There, doctors examined Navalny and concluded that he had been poisoned by Novichok, a chemical warfare agent developed in the Soviet Union.
