In the flooded part of the Kherson region, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations and the military are preventing volunteers from evacuating people

In the city of Oleshki in the part of the Kherson region occupied by Russian troops, the Ministry of Emergency Situations does not allow volunteers to go to Nizhnyaya Street, which was flooded after the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. This was reported to the Agency by the coordinators of the volunteer chat for the evacuation of people on the left bank of the Dnieper. They suspect that the street was closed because there are dead people there.

Another volunteer told Kholod about this on condition of anonymity. “Almost the entire Lower Street is corpses. Volunteers are not allowed there,” she said.

According to Yaroslav Vasiliev, the creator of the evacuation chat, on the eve of this street there were especially many messages asking for help. Vasiliev said that in the morning the volunteers tried twice to sail there in five boats, but each time they were turned around by the Emergencies Ministry.

Vasiliev noted that the street in question is in a lowland and it was flooded more than others. “There are already reports from relatives every half an hour that people have died,” he said.

Ekaterina, the volunteer chat coordinator, said that a difficult situation had developed on Nizhnyaya Street the night before. According to her, people in flooded houses reported that they were being flooded and "they would not last until morning."

Nevertheless, the volunteers had to wait until the morning. Since the Ministry of Emergency Situations forbids them to work during the curfew - from 23:00 to 4:00. Volunteers are sure that the Ministry of Emergency Situations is not strong enough to help all those in need.

“Yesterday we had about 20-30 boats sailing around the city - once a boat of the Ministry of Emergency Situations was seen,” says Vasiliev.

According to him, there are still thousands of people in the flooded areas who are waiting to be evacuated. More than a thousand such applications have been received through telegrams alone. According to volunteers, on average, one application is five people in need of help.

The work of volunteers, according to them, is hindered not only by the Ministry of Emergency Situations, but also by the Russian military. Vasiliev said that he knew of at least three cases when servicemen took away boats from volunteers.

According to the Russian Emergencies Ministry, 15,000 houses in 15 settlements were flooded in the occupied part of the Kherson region, and 4,280 people were evacuated. The agency notes that more than 20,000 people lived in Oleshki alone at the time of the flood.
