The number of beneficiaries of a military survivor's pension has grown especially sharply in Tyva - more than five times compared to 2021. In seven more regions, the growth was more than 50%. Most of the new recipients of such a pension in 2022 were registered in the Urals and Far Eastern Federal Districts. Least of all - in the Central, Siberian and North-West, as well as in the annexed Crimea.
Also in Russia, the number of people who received a disability due to a war injury has increased. According to Important Stories, which refers to the Federal Register of Disabled Persons, from February 24, 2022 to May 2023, 4,500 participants in the war in Ukraine could apply for military disability.
Obtaining a disability and applying for a survivor's pension are called by journalists long and bureaucratic processes, therefore, in reality, there are many more dead and wounded. According to the BBC Russian Service and Mediazona, which collect information from open sources, more than 25,000 Russian soldiers have died in Ukraine. The last time the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on those killed in Ukraine was at the end of September 2022. Then Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that 5,937 people had died in the war.
