The Estonian Parliament (Riigikogu) passed amendments to the family law, which allowed same-sex marriage in the country. It is reported by ERR .
The document, which provides that two adults of any gender can enter into marriage, was supported by 55 deputies, 34 voted against. The law will come into force on January 1, 2024.
Estonia will become the first country in the post-Soviet space where same-sex couples can marry, and the second country in Eastern Europe - Slovenia was the first.
Since 2016, Estonia has also had a law in place that allows same-sex couples to enter into a cohabitation agreement, a status that is effectively the same as marriage. However, for the full-fledged work of the law, the parliament did not adopt the relevant executive acts.
