The 96-year-old mother of a Kaliningrad activist convicted of “fake news” will be transferred to guardianship

The 96-year-old mother of Igor Baryshnikov, convicted in the “fake” case, will be handed over to the guardianship and trusteeship authorities,reports OVD-Info. The copy of the decision of the Soviet City Court of the Kaliningrad Region, to which the project refers, states that Evgenia Baryshnikova is not able to move independently and needs constant care. She has no other relatives except her son.

Evgenia Baryshnikova was born in 1926. She survived the war under occupation and is being helped by a Jewish charity center as a victim of the Holocaust, Sota reports . Her son Igor Baryshnikov, who looked after her, said that a year ago her mother maintained a clear mind and reason, talked and listened to the radio. However, after the first search of their apartment and eight days of Igor Baryshnikov’s arrest, the woman became “different” and “fell into unconsciousness.”

The first criminal case about “fakes” about the army (Part 1 of Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code) against 64-year-old Baryshnikov was opened in May 2022. The reason was his Facebook posts about the shelling of a maternity hospital in Mariupol and the killing of civilians in Bucha. The apartment where Baryshnikov lived with his elderly mother was searched, after which he was given a written undertaking not to leave as a preventive measure.

In June 2022, a second criminal case was opened against Baryshnikov under the article on “fakes” based on political hatred (clause “e” of part 2 of article 207.3 of the Criminal Code). This time, a case was opened because of posts about the sunken cruiser Moskva and the shooting of civilians in Ukraine by the Russian military. This case was subsequently merged with the first.

Baryshnikov’s lawyers stated at the trial that the man was suspected of having cancer and that he had a cystostomy installed in his stomach. His attending physician said that without proper treatment, Baryshnikov could die in prison. On June 22, the Soviet City Court of the Kaliningrad Region sentenced Igor Baryshnikov to seven and a half years in prison.
