Russian military executed more than 70 civilians in Ukraine without trial - UN

Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Russian military has carried out more than 70 extrajudicial executions in the occupied territories. This is stated in the latest UN report "Detention of civilians in the context of the armed attack of the Russian Federation on Ukraine."

The document contains data for the period from February 24, 2022 to May 23, 2023. During this time, according to the head of the UN Mission for Human Rights in Ukraine, Matilda Bogner, a total of 77 extrajudicial executions of civilians "who were arbitrarily detained by the Russian Federation" were documented.

According to the report, among those executed were 72 men and five women. At least one other civilian died "as a result of torture, inhumane conditions of detention and/or denial of essential medical care."

At the same time, according to the UN, more than 800 people were “arbitrarily detained” by Russia in Ukraine.

The report notes that Ukraine also allowed "arbitrary detentions" and violations of international law, but on a much smaller scale.
