The European Court of Human Rights declared the investigation into the murder of politician Boris Nemtsov ineffective. The corresponding decision is published on the website of the court.
The judges of the ECHR ruled that the Russian security forces did not investigate all the circumstances of the murder of Nemtsov - in particular, they ignored the political motives of the crime and did not contact his customers.
“The court considers that the investigation did not consider the most important aspect of the case, that is, the identity of the persons who could order and organize the crime,” the decision says.
Previously, Nemtsov's relatives have repeatedly drawn the investigators' attention to "clear signs of extensive family and professional ties between the defendants in the case and other persons <...> including high-ranking officials of the Chechen Republic" and to "the conflict between Ramzan Kadyrov and Mr. Nemtsov, who, as reportedly led to death threats."
As a result, the ECHR ruled in its decision that the Russian authorities had violated Article 2 of the Convention on Human Rights, which guarantees the protection of the right to life by law. In addition, the ECHR ordered the Russian authorities to pay 20,000 euros in compensation for moral damage to the daughter of the murdered Zhanna Nemtsova.
Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov was shot dead on the Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge in central Moscow on February 27, 2015. Later, five organizers and perpetrators of the crime were sentenced to various prison terms, but its customers were never identified.
