In total, about 720 thousand people lived in the plebiscite area. Of these, in Polish dialects, according to the 1910 census, they talked about 270 thousand (slightly less than 40%). <...>

The referendum took place on July 11, 1920. The results showed the crushing victory of Germany. In order to remain in its composition, 98% of voters voted in Allenstein and 92% in Marienverter.

It turned out that a simple appeal to blood kinship and a common language with the Poles is not enough. The decades of the consistent Germanization of the region were affected <...>. In addition, despite the presence of inter -union commissions and peacekeepers, the Germans held in their hands an administrative and power resource. Polish activists were pursued in every possible way, beat, and even killed. <...>

In subsequent years, Allenstein and Marienverter were forced by all kinds of monuments and memorials in honor of the German electoral victory, which defended the German status of the region.

This story once again shows that the Versailles world left a space for a maneuver for Germany. There was no longer anything like this after 25 years, when she lost the next world war. In 1945, the allies decided to transfer these lands to Poland without any referenda. The entire German population was expelled. ”
