NATO and Russia

The participant of our project “After”, the editor -in -chief of the journal “Russia in Global Policy” Fedor Lukyanov in the Russian Newspaper writes :

“ What NATO considers a neat line of behavior, designed to prevent direct drawing, in Russia is perceived as the direct participation of the alliance in the hostilities on the enemy side.

It is most noteworthy that a group of states crystallizes from NATO, which not only advocate building this participation, but, in principle, are inclined to admit the physical involvement of their armed forces in hostilities. And certainly they advocate the maximum militarization of the entire Russian-Natovsky borderland-from the construction of military bases to the placement of nuclear weapons.

From the time of the Cold War, this state of affairs is distinguished by the fact that clearly established rules of conduct that would be based on the balance of power, now. Actually, the arrangement is clarified by the most traditional way - on the battlefield. And before it clears up, there will be no full understanding of NATO functionality for the coming years. Despite the demonstration of unity, the discrepancies within NATO are obvious and significant. They can be overcome, but early to judge when and what will turn out at the exit.

The North Atlantic bloc will have to rethink the previous approaches that do not correspond to the period of an acute military-political confrontation on the verge of war. The same applies to Russia. In the previous decades, Russia and NATO were in a different position, but proceeded from the impossibility of a direct clash. This, unfortunately, is already in the past . ”
