Hundreds of athletes refused to speak under the Russian flag. Who are they and where did they go?

The war in Ukraine has deprived thousands of Russian athletes to participate in international competitions. Publicly, most athletes do not say about the change of sports citizenship, which is why such decisions become known only during the competition for which they undergo the registration procedure. After analyzing reports of sports citizenship, open data about the participants in the competition, as well as open registers of sports federations, Kholod counted 204 athletes who changed or are going to change the sports citizenship of Russia. The list included both professionals with the name - the champions of Europe and the world in their sports - and very young athletes, for many of whom the abandonment of Russian citizenship is often the only way out to preserve their own career.

The largest representation among sports - among chess players: 141 people in the period 2022–2023 changed the flag under which they perform. Such a large number of chess players in the list is explained by the simplicity of their search: the International Chess Organization (FIDE) keeps records of all athletes and tracks “national transfers” - the transition of the athlete from the Federation of one country to another.

The second place was divided by figure skating and equestrian sport, where Russia lost 11 athletes. In third place, rhythmic gymnastics and tennis are located: five athletes announced a change in sports citizenship. Motorsport and football were missing four athletes, many of whom have long been at the highest level. Two - cycling, motorcycle racing, speed skating, hockey, swimming, rowing, boxing and sailing. One athlete was lost by freestyle wrestling, athletics, biathlon, short track, MMA, judo, sports gymnastics and skiing.

In an attempt to return to the international level, part of the athletes tried to change the Russian flag to the Syrian, which had already turned into a scandal at the Panarabian games in Algeria: some athletes were registered as Syrian without a real change of sports, only two athletes were officially declared - their profiles with changed citizens appeared officially on the sites of international federations Gymnastics and judo .

According to Cold, the most hospitable country for Russian athletes was Israel: 25 athletes are now under this flag. In second place - Serbia: 19 athletes; third place in Germany: 13 athletes. France sheltered 12 athletes, Poland - 11. Kazakhstan - 10, Armenia and Great Britain - nine, the USA - seven, Spain - six. The same number of athletes chose Palestine, despite the fact that her international status is not defined; Nevertheless, this is a good choice for athletes, since the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allows to speak under the Palestinian flag.

Georgia, Turkey and Finland chose five athletes each. Canada, Montenegro, Greece, Romania and Austria - four, Belgium, Italy and Hungary - three. Australia, Slovenia, Cyprus, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Azerbaijan, Estonia, the Netherlands, Ukraine and Lithuania - two athletes each. Finally, single transitions are recorded under the flags of Chile, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Denmark, Vanuatu, Norway, Croatia, South Korea, Portugal, North Macedonia and Moldova.

The list of significant athletes contains biathlete Daria Virolainen, who is currently trained and performs in Finland. However, she has not yet made the final decision about her future, which is why 204 athletes did not get into a general analysis.

The outcome of Russian athletes in foreign federations acquires a massive nature. This was directly stated by the vice-president of the Kazakhstani Tennis Federation Yuri Polsky, according to which more than 30 Russian tennis players submitted applications for the transition to the Kazakhstan Federation. “[Basically] these are children over 12 years old, [but] there are professionals, adult athletes who would like to [make such a transfer],” he said at the end of 2022.

The head of the Russian Olympic Committee (OKR) Stanislav Pozdnyakov recently complained that foreign states are trying to lure Russian athletes against the backdrop of a ban on international level. The President of the Russian Skate Union (TFR) Nikolai Gulyaev claimed that Russian athletes even call and personally invite to go to other national teams.

In current conditions, Russian athletes often turn out to be hostages of the situation. The criteria for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to admit Russian athletes are in the absence of public support for the war in Ukraine, as well as the lack of ties with any military organizations. The last point, for example, forces all CSKA athletes to abandon their current employer, which is simply impossible for many. Unknown to international competitions, Russian team teams are not allowed.

At the same time, the change of sports citizenship for Russians is also associated with additional difficulties: it is necessary to notify the decision of the OKR or the corresponding sports federation of Russia. Some athletes will have to sit out the so -called quarantine - the period during which they cannot play for the new team, in some sports it reaches three years.

There is no need to expect understanding from officials. State Duma deputies, for example, call the athletes who have changed citizenship traitors, offer legally to ban the return to the flag of Russia, and some athletes leave the Russian Federation and completely prohibit it . Moreover, in many cases, the final decision is made by the International Federation.

“Cold” suspects that the real number of Russians who have changed sports citizenship may be many times more , since a significant share falls on young non -public athletes from non -excerled sports. For example, only in 2022 the Figure Skating Federation received 19 applications for a replacement of sports citizenship, but in 2022–2023, publicly about the change of flag became known only in 11 cases.

• Александра Максакова — участница Олимпийских игр 2020 года в Токио, специализируется на выездке . В 2022 году сменила спортивное гражданство на палестинское.

• Егор Щибрик — победитель Первенства Европы среди юниоров — 2021 и топ-5 на этапе Кубка мира по конкуру в Саудовской Аравии в 2021-м. Как и его жена Александра Максакова, в 2022 году сменил спортивное гражданство на палестинское.

• Владимир Туганов стал чемпионом СССР по конному спорту в 1983 году, участник двух летних Олимпийских игр, в феврале 2021 года стал победителем международного турнира в Абу-Даби, бывший вице-президент Федерации конного спорта России. В феврале 2023 года принял спортивное гражданство Палестины.

• Екатерина Дубровина — 22-летняя выпускница МГУ, серебряный призер международного турнира во французском Видобане. Теперь наездница выступает за Армению.
• Елизавета Минина — 27-летняя спортсменка, призер и победитель международных соревнований. С 2023 года спортсменка выступает под флагом Палестины.
• Алина Свердлова — 20-летняя спортсменка, участница международных соревнований. Поменяла российское гражданство на британское.
• Любовь Кочетова — 41-летняя участница Олимпийских игр, трехкратная победительница этапов Кубка мира по верховой езде, бывшийчлен сборной России. С января 2023 года сменила спортивное гражданство на США .
• Мария Маденова — 26-летняя спортсменка покинула российскую Федерацию конного спорта в феврале 2023 года. Теперь многократный участник международных турниров будет выступать за Палестину.
• Татьяна Макарова — 61-летняя мастер спорта конного спорта, многократный победитель советских и российских чемпионатов, участница международных турниров. С 2011 года базируется в Нидерландах. В 2023 году приняла решение сменить спортивное гражданство на Палестину .

• Дарья Пономарева вышла из состава российской Федерации конного спорта в марте 2023 года. Теперь выступает за Молдову.

• Елена Старр —проживающая в Германии наездница — одна из немногих спортсменок, признавших, что решилась на смену российского гражданства из-за войны: «За последний год мое сердце разбивалось столько раз, что я чувствовала себя опустошенной и беспомощной перед теми на Украине, чья жизнь несказанно изменилась», — говорила она. Старр перешла в армянскую федерацию конного спорта и теперь выступает под флагом этой страны. Помимо войны, она объяснила свое решение желанием увековечить наследие своей семьи и внести вклад в развитие конного спорта в Армении.

• Михаил Новиков — один из лучших российских кайтсерферов до 23 лет, который до войны боро л ся за высшие награды на международных соревнованиях. В 2023 году внезапно поменял Россию на островное государство Вануату. В новом статусе он уже выиграл открытый Панамериканский чемпионат.
• Денис Тарадин — чемпион России и призер международных соревнований по кайтсерфингу. С 2022 года успешно выступает под флагом Кипра.
