The State Duma banned transgender transition

The State Duma in the third reading unanimously adopted a bill banning transgender transition, changing the gender marker in documents and adopting children by trans people.

The document amends the Family Code, as well as the federal laws "On acts of civil status", "On citizenship" and "On the basics of protecting the health of citizens."

The adopted law prohibits Russians from making a transgender transition. This applies to both surgery and hormone therapy.

“Medical workers are prohibited from carrying out medical interventions aimed at changing the sex of a person, including the formation in a person of primary and (or) secondary sexual characteristics of the opposite sex,” the document says.

Exceptions were made for operations that are aimed at treating "congenital anomalies, genetic and endocrine diseases associated with a violation of the formation of the genital organs in children." However, this will require the approval of a special medical commission.

The adopted amendments prohibit trans people from changing the gender marker in their documents. Also, a transgender transition made earlier can become the basis for divorce.

In addition, they will not be able to adopt a child or become guardians. Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Pyotr Tolstoy said that the law does not have retroactive effect, therefore, according to him, already adopted children will not be taken away from transpersons. The Federation Council will consider this bill on July 19.
