The court acquitted two police officers who broke the leg of a Krasnodar resident who tried to climb over the fence of his house.

The policemen were tried in the case of abuse of power with the use of violence and special means (paragraphs “a” and “b” of Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code), the prosecution requested real terms.

According to investigators, in March 2019, Marchenko tried to climb over the fence of his own house to pick up the keys. This was seen by Zyabkin and Tatarkov, who were patrolling the street. The victim recalled that the police ran up to him, threw him to the ground and began beating him, hitting him on the leg with a baton.

The security forces handcuffed the Krasnodar man and wanted to take him to the police station. After some time, Marchenko’s mother, who came running in response to the screams, convinced the patrol officers to let him go. Doctors diagnosed the victim with a closed leg fracture, which the expert qualified as serious harm to health.

The case against the security forces was opened in April 2019. Then they were sent to a pre-trial detention center.

Team Against Torture lawyer Sergei Romanov said that human rights activists intend to file a cassation appeal against the acquittal.
