A military coup took place in Niger

In Niger, a military group announced the removal of President Mohamed Bazum from power. This is reported by Reuters.

Colonel-General Amadou Abdraman appeared on national television, accompanied by nine other military personnel in uniform. He announced that the work of all institutions in the country was suspended, a curfew was introduced and borders were closed.

“We, the defense and security forces, have decided to put an end to the regime that you know from bad governance and deteriorating security,” Abdraman said. He also warned foreign nations against interfering in the country's affairs.

On July 26, Niger's presidential guards blocked Mohamed Bazum in his presidential palace in the country's capital, Niamey. At the same time, the president's office stated that only the guards were participating in the military coup attempt, while the armed forces of the republic remained loyal to the current government.

Mohamed Bazum is the seventh president of Niger, who came to power in 2021. Then, a few days before his inauguration, an unsuccessful coup attempt had already taken place in the country.

This is the fourth military coup in Niger since the country gained independence in 1960.
