The Japanese division of the American company Warner Bros. Pictures apologized to Japanese people for the Barbenheimer memes. The corresponding letter was published on the official Twitter account of Barbie in Japan.
It says the "Barbenheimer" movement was created by fans who called for watching both the Warner Bros. movie "Barbie" and Universal Pictures' "Oppenheimer," which were released on the same day. "This movement is not official," Barbie's Japanese Twitter account said.
Oppenheimer is a biopic directed by Christopher Nolan about the creator of the atomic bomb, Robert Oppenheimer. The film also touches on the topic of dropping atomic bombs on the Japanese Hiroshima and Nagasaki. According to Vice , the American Barbie Twitter account previously published a post with the words “This summer will be unforgettable” in response to a joint photo of Oppenheimer and Barbie against the backdrop of an atomic explosion. This post has now been deleted.
“We find it extremely unfortunate that the official Barbie US headquarters account responded to fan posts on social media as a result of this movement. We take this situation very seriously and demand that the US headquarters take appropriate action. We apologize to anyone who was offended by this series of inconsiderate responses,” Warner Bros. said in a letter.
