The Moscow City Court, at an off-site hearing in IK-6 in the Vladimir region, sentenced Alexei Navalny to 19 years in a special regime colony on an “extremist case,” confirmed the politician’s lawyers YouTube channel, to journalist Vasily Polonsky. Former technical director of the Navalny LIVE Daniel Kholodny, was sentenced to eight years in a general regime colony.
FBK employee Olga Guseva clarified with reference to lawyers that the oppositionist was also fined 500 thousand rubles.
At the end of July, the prosecutor's office requested a policy of 20 years in a special regime colony for Navalny and 10 years in a general regime colony for Kholodny. According to the case file, Navalny was accused of calling for extremism, creating an NGO that infringes on the rights of citizens, financing extremism, creating an extremist community, involving minors in committing dangerous acts, and rehabilitating Nazism.
Kholodny was charged with participation in extremist activities and its financing. The reason for the case was his work on the YouTube channel , including collecting donations.
FBK director Ivan Zhdanov said that the charges against Navalny under articles of creating an NGO that infringes on the rights of citizens and an extremist community are related to the work of the fund and headquarters, and the security forces saw “financing of extremism” in the collection of donations for the work of organizations created by the politician. The prosecution of Navalny under the article on “involving minors in dangerous activities” is connected with the participation of several people under 18 years of age in the actions announced by the oppositionist.
The accusation of calls for extremism, according to Zhdanov, was based on the statements of other people - former FBK operator Pavel Zelensky and one of the participants in the rally as part of Navalny’s presidential campaign. They were both found guilty under this article; the investigation then decided that they “acted under the leadership of Navalny.”
As supporters of the oppositionist noted, the case for the rehabilitation of Nazism was opened because of a collage with a monument “The Motherland Calls!” covered with brilliant green. It was made by the Volgograd headquarters after the politician was splashed with brilliant green in 2017. In addition, Navalny published several sheets of other evidence of the accusation. Among them are the lyrics of Morgenstern’s track “Navalny Lekha”, as well as information about crypto transfers to the oppositionist from a wallet called PutinHui.
