The Belarusian opposition presented the New Belarus passport in Warsaw, the Belarusian Radio Liberty Service reports .
According to Valery Kovalevsky, a representative of the United Transition Cabinet of Belarus, oppositionists are negotiating with representatives of the European Union on recognition of a new document, which was developed taking into account "European traditions". By design, the passport is similar to passports of the EU countries. It does not have information in Russian, which is officially state -owned in Belarus.
The National Passport of New Belarus was decided to develop after a large number of Belarusians who left the country after mass repressions that began in 2020, faced the problem of exchanging passports through the current diplomatic missions of Belarus, which subordinate to the regime of Alexander Lukashenko.
The passport sample was submitted as part of the New Belarus 2023 conference, which is held in Warsaw by the office of the former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya , the united transition cabinet of Belarus and the Coordinating Council of the Opposition.
“At this conference, we will talk about what new Belarus should be and how to reach it ,” Tikhanovskaya said in introductory speech. “ We will talk about what reforms we need, about the methods of our struggle and ways to support our political prisoners, about what relations should be with neighbors and how to return Belarus to the map of Europe.”
“It is difficult to say at what point of this path we are - at the end or only at the very beginning. On this path, we cannot avoid mistakes, burnout and mutual insults. But we will only master this path together,” Tikhalovskaya summed up.
In turn, the representative of the transit period of the United Transition Cabinet of Belarus Pavel Latushko noted that the situation in Belarus is still in the worst state than in 2020 " - due to the large number of political prisoners, systematic repression and participation of the Lukashenko regime in aggression against Ukraine.
According to the opposition, now there are almost 1800 political prisoners in Belarus, including 196 women and 8 minors. Based on this, one of the main goals of democratic forces, according to Latushko, is their liberation, which is possible only when Lukashenko was removed from power, the termination of the complicity of Belarus in the war against Ukraine, the withdrawal of all Russian troops and bases from the territory of Belarus, as well as withdrawing from the "Union State", the CSTO and other interstate formations.
The conference was also performed by the representative of the Kalinovsky regiment, fighting on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Pavel Kitta. He called the opposition to the formation of the "national liberation movement", the military center of which will be a regiment.
Ivan Kravtsov , representative of the headquarters of one of the former presidential candidates Viktor Babariko, now political prisoners, noted that foreign politicians should join the process of struggle against repression, "who continue to meet with representatives of Lukashenko’s regime," as well as Western diplomats "who are still present in the Belarusian territory."
Valery Sakhashchik , a representative of defense and national security of the United Transition Cabinet of Belarus, added that Belarus should develop an external strategy, taking into account other probable scenarios for the development of the situation in the region after the end of the war in Ukraine, including this, if Ukraine loses its territories that remain under Russian control.
“Then Russia will only strengthen its influence and expansion in Belarus,” Sahashchik said, suggesting that “the West will take the restraint position - and that’s it,” and the tasks that the Belarusian opposition sets himself “seriously complicated”.
“I would suggest preparing for just such events,” Sauchachik summed up.
