Residents of Makhachkala blocked the road to protest the power outage

On the evening of August 9, residents of Makhachkala went out to protest due to power outages. They blocked traffic on Magomed Gadzhiev Street. This was reported by the Caucasian Knot publication.

Protesters said there had been no light in their homes for three days and accused the authorities of inaction. According to the publication, four electrical substations burned down in Makhachkala in one day due to abnormal heat.

The head of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, commented on the protest action. “Every summer tests our networks for strength and, let’s be honest, they can’t stand this test yet. A series of hot days again led to rolling blackouts and accidents. Many Dagestan families were left without electricity, and no matter the objective reasons, this does not make it any easier for people,” he wrote on the morning of August 10 in his Telegram channel.

Melikov explained the interruptions in power supply by saying that “problems in our republic have not been resolved systematically for too long,” and called on residents of the republic not to expect “quick results.”

At the same time, he promised to suppress protests like this. “Such ‘forms of dialogue’ will only add to our problems, giving ground to our ill-wishers to play on people’s problems for their own dishonest purposes, so in the future they will be suppressed according to all the rules of the law,” he wrote.

As reported by the Ministry of Emergency Situations for Dagestan, on August 9–10, the temperature in the republic reached 43 degrees.
