Presidential candidate shot dead in Ecuador

In Ecuador, presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was killed in an assassination attempt. This was reported by the local publication El Universo.

According to him, an unknown person shot Villavicencio three times in the head when he was getting into a car after an election meeting with voters in the capital of Ecuador, Quito.

According to the country's Prosecutor General's Office, nine more people were wounded in the attack, including parliamentary candidate Gisella Molina and two police officers.

The attacker was wounded by return fire and died in hospital. Local law enforcement officers detained six people on suspicion of involvement in the assassination attempt.

Previously, Villavicencio, who is known as an active fighter against corruption, reported receiving threats to him, and therefore he was provided with state protection.

Early presidential and parliamentary elections in Ecuador are scheduled for August 20.
