On August 12, a former member of the Islamic Renaissance Party, political prisoner Jaloliddin Makhmudov, died in a Tajik colony. His death demonstrates the illegal and inhumane treatment of political prisoners in Tajik prisons, said the National Alliance of Tajikistan .

The authorities did not provide information about the causes of death of the political prisoner. According to Makhmudov's relatives, he suffered from bladder problems, blood pressure and diabetes.

On August 13, the Alliance Council published a statement in which it called on human rights activists to pay attention to the situation of political prisoners in the country.

“The authorities deliberately create intolerable and inhuman conditions for prisoners, especially political prisoners, in order to achieve their goal of extrajudicial killing of dissidents,” the alliance said in a statement.

Context

• Jaloliddin Makhmudov is a former board member of the Islamic Renaissance Party of Tajikistan, which is banned in the Central Asian country. In 2015, the Supreme Court of the republic declared the political association terrorist.

• He was first detained in February 2015, when he was a member of the Central Commission for Elections and Referendums of Tajikistan. In 2019, he was released from prison under an amnesty.

  A year later, Makhmudov was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison on charges of “receiving money from wanted persons.”
