Study: Almost No One Who Has a Mastectomy Regrets Having the Surgery

Almost no one who has undergone a mastectomy at the University of Michigan Gender Affirming Therapy Center in the past 25 years regrets the decision to undergo the procedure.

A recent study of 139 transgender and non-binary people found that about 99% of respondents had a satisfaction level of four or higher on a scale of five. At the same time, the median level of regret about the decision was 0 out of 100 - this means that at least half of the respondents do not regret the decision to undergo the procedure at all.

The study's authors point out that it had its limitations—it was conducted at a single facility with a relatively small sample—and call for broader study of the issue. The researchers also note that their results are consistent with other specific studies and show an overall pattern of low regret about gender-affirming interventions.
