As a result of a dam break in the North Baikal region of Buryatia, the Kholodnaya River overflowed its banks. It washed out the railway tracks of the Baikal-Amur Mainline, said the head of the region, Alexey Tsydenov.
Train traffic on BAM has been stopped. 200 meters of the railway track and 10 contact network supports were damaged. According to Tsydenov, emergency restoration work will be completed by August 26.
“BAM will stand for another week! The damage to the country's economy from cargo delays will amount to billions of rubles. Plus the cost of restoring the railway. And we need to restore our regional highway,” the head of the republic wrote. According to him, populated areas “have not yet been damaged” as a result of the river overflowing its banks.
As reported by the East Siberian Transport Prosecutor's Office, a dam in the North Baikal region of Buryatia partially collapsed on the morning of August 19 due to heavy rainfall. As a result, the railway track was washed out at the 1102nd kilometer of the Kholodnaya - Nizhneangarsk section of the East Siberian Railway.
