Angeles Bejar, the mother of the suspended head of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, locked herself in a church and went on a hunger strike because of the restrictions imposed on her son, reports EFE.
The woman called what was happening to Rubiales “an inhumane and bloody hunt,” which, in her opinion, he does not deserve. Previously, Rubiales was accused of harassment due to the fact that he kissed an athlete of the Spanish women's national football team without asking.
As EFE writes, Angeles Bejart barricaded herself with her sister in a church in the city of Motril, Granada province in southern Spain. She called on soccer player Jennifer Hermoso, who was kissed by her son, to “tell the whole truth” about what happened.
Bejar said “sexualized violence does not happen when there is consent on both sides, as shown in the images” of the kiss. Rubiales' mother said her son was "not capable of hurting anyone" and asked for people's understanding because "this situation could happen to anyone."
On August 21, the Spanish women's football team won the World Cup for the first time in history. During the awards ceremony, Rubiales openly rejoiced at the victory of his compatriots. At one point, he cupped the head of one of the players, Jennifer Hermoso, and kissed her on the lips. After this, Hermoso publicly spoke out and said that she did not like the kiss and that she could not do anything about it.
On August 26, the Disciplinary Committee of the International Football Federation (FIFA) suspended Luis Rubiales from work for 90 days. He was also banned from communicating with football player Hermoso and her relatives. The Madrid prosecutor's office has accepted a criminal complaint against Rubiales for sexualized violence.
