The FSB detained American consulate officer Robert Shonov in Vladivostok. This was reported by TASS with reference to the Public Relations Center (PSC) of the intelligence service.
They clarified that Shonov was charged with confidential cooperation with a foreign state (Article 275.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Under this article, he faces imprisonment for a term of three to eight years and a fine of up to one million rubles.
According to the FSB, “from September 2022 until the moment of his arrest, Shonov, for financial compensation, carried out tasks for employees of the political department of the US Embassy in Moscow, Jeffrey Sillin and David Bernstein, to collect information about the progress of a special military operation, mobilization processes in the regions of Russia, problematic issues and assessing their impact on the protest activity of the population on the eve of the presidential elections of the Russian Federation in 2024.”
In the video published by the FSB Central Election Commission, Shonov confesses. The intelligence service also reported that they intend to interrogate the mentioned employees of the American embassy, “in connection with which appropriate subpoenas have been sent to the US embassy in Moscow.”
