The case of treason against student Verdiyan was transferred to the Moscow City Court; The lawyer refused to even give his name

The Moscow City Court is considering a criminal case of treason (Article 275 of the Criminal Code) against 21-year-old student Gleb Verdiyan. The next hearing was supposed to take place today, but the accused was not brought to court, a Mediazona correspondent reports.

Verdiyan's lawyer, who was outside the courtroom, refused to give his name to the reporter. He also did not say when the next hearing would take place, or whether debates were planned soon - the defense lawyer only confirmed that the case was being considered in court.

None of Verdiyan’s relatives or acquaintances came to the meeting. The case is being considered by a panel of three judges chaired by Judge Vitaly Belitsky. According to Mediazona, the case came to court on July 12, the first hearing took place on August 1.

Gleb Verdiyan is the youngest person accused of treason, whose prosecution is known to journalists. Initially, in October 2022, he was arrested for 10 days under the article of petty hooliganism (Part 2 of Article 20.1 of the Administrative Code). As wrote the BBC Russian Service , he was then detained under the pretext that he was “disturbing public order” at a bus stop near the airport. When the period of administrative arrest expired, he was accused of treason and sent to a pre-trial detention center.

It is not known what exactly Verdiyan is accused of; the materials of the treason cases are classified. According to the BBC Russian Service, he is charged with preparation for treason (Part 1 of Article 30, Article 275 of the Criminal Code).

Verdiyan was a second-year student at the Faculty of Economics at the Astrakhan State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (AGASU). Before that, he graduated from college at the same university and received a diploma in architecture.
