What's happened?
Recently, the State Duma adopted amendments to the law “On Psychiatric Assistance”, restricting independent control over compliance with patients of psychoneurological boarding schools. The PNI system, which the specialist showed before, criticized the inhumane attitude towards the patient and the lack of necessary assistance, can become even more cruel.
In the selection, we collected texts and films that talk in detail about how life is arranged in Russian PNI, and why these closed institutions cause pain and suffering to their inhabitants.

The life of the majority of the inhabitant of a neuropsychiatric boarding school passes behind a high fence of the institution and is hidden from the eyes of third -party observers. But the journalist of Novaya Gazeta, Elena Kostyuchenko and photographer Yuri Kozyrev, were able to spend two weeks in a neuropsychiatric boarding school and wrote a large report. Animated film based on the diary of the inhabitant of the PNI
Life in a neuropsychiatric boarding school is subordinated to a strict routine and rules: climbing at seven in the morning, you can wash only on a bath day, you can get boiling water for tea only from a sideboard during working hours, and walking in the permitted territory.
The animated film of Maria Kogan-Lerner is based on the diary of Tatyana Vnukhevich-Bagdasaryan-women with cerebral palsy, who lived in closed institutions of Moscow until 35 years old. The film consists of a series of short stories: “brush”, “medicine”, “walk” and “tea” who talk about everyday life of people enclosed in strict frames of PNI.
The view of the scientist and the volunteer
Anthropologists Anna Klepikova for several years was a volunteer in children's boarding schools and adults PNI and wrote a book in the genre of Anthropological Roman. In the book “Probably, I am a fool” the story of the internal changes that occur with the author in the process of volunteering is combined with the scientific view of a social researcher, and field notes with portraits of the inhabitant of the boarding school and volunteer_k.

Documentary about the friendship of the volunteer and the inhabitant of the boarding school
During the Covid-19 pandemic, people from PNI were allowed to be sent to the accompanied accommodation for relatives or close people to remove the load from medical institutions. So, the volunteer of one of the boarding schools Arina took the girl Nina to her home. They lived together for a year, and when the quarantine ended, Nina wanted to stay. 30-year-old Arina had to decide whether she was ready to take responsibility for the life of an adult woman who spent almost her whole life in closed institutions.
Photo project about an alternative to PNI
The special project of the photographer Maria Gelman about how people with mental disorders live in the village of Svetlana, their relatives, as well as doctors and volunteer_ki. There are no fences or closed chambers, as in PNI, there are no strict rules, there are no leaders and subordinates. A resident of the village of Svetlana themselves decides how to arrange their life and what to do: to take care of the garden, work in a cheese car, a carpentry workshop or look after animals.
