According to local police, workers were forced to get to the construction site bypassing the remaining fragment of the Great Wall of China. To shorten their commute, they used an excavator to widen and deepen the hole in the wall to a width that allowed them to drive through it.

Both workers - a 38-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman - were detained and an investigation has been launched.

Authorities emphasized that the detainees caused “irreparable damage to the integrity of the Great Wall of the Ming era and the safety of cultural relics.” Located in Yuyu County, the section of the Great Wall of China, built during the Ming Dynasty, is classified as a historical and cultural site protected at the provincial level.

The Great Wall of China, which was built and rebuilt continuously from 220 BC until the Ming Dynasty in the 1600s, was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

The wall is constantly being damaged. In 2018, the local press reported that only 8% of the wall was considered well preserved, and 30% was completely destroyed.
