Sharks attacked the catamaran of an expedition from St. Petersburg

In the Pacific Ocean, the ship of the Russian Ocean Way round -the -world expedition, emerging from St. Petersburg, sank as a result of the attacks of the amazeles. This was reported by the telegram channel of the expedition, Izvestia paid attention to the post. Information "Interfax" was also confirmed in the Tomsk branch of the Russian Geographical Society.

Chronology. The incident occurred about 835 kilometers southeast of the Australian city of Carns. The board was attacked by the Brazilian luminous sharks, also known as shark-kukathers or sharks-sigars. On September 4, they damaged the left cylinder of the catamaran. On September 5, they already bitten the right cylinder.

The catamaran lost stability and began to sink, the crew gave the SOS signal. The head of the Coastal Headquarters of the expedition Julia Kalyuzhnaya contacted Australia’s rescue service, and within 45 minutes a cargo ship arrived at the scene, which picked up the expedition participants. The catamaran himself drowned - there was no equipment for his rise on the rescue ship.

About the expedition. The expedition included three people: members of the Tomsk branch of the Russian Geographical Society Evgeny Kovalevsky and Stanislav Berezkin, as well as the Frenchman Vincent Etienne. It started in St. Petersburg on July 1, 2021 and was supposed to return to the city exactly three years later.

In a conversation with Interfax, Kalyuzhny clarified, Kovalevsky and Berezkin will continue the expedition on a new ship.
