In what assets do readers of the “paper” invest, whether they began to invest less after the start of the war and what are they doing in order to maintain their savings with growing inflation and falling ruble? We asked you to answer questions about personal investments and compared the results with the fresh statistics of the Central Bank.
In early September, the Central Bank of Russia said that according to the results of the second quarter of 2023, the number of Russians who have brokerage accounts reached 25.95 million people. This is 6 % more than in the first quarter of 2023, and 27 % more than in the second quarter of last year, the regulator said .
Thus, 34 % of the country's economically active population have access to the Russian stock market, the Central Bank notes. At the same time, some investors open several accounts - as a result, now in Russia there are about 33 million such accounts.
However, the Central Bank considers such growth rates “restrained”: for example, in 2021 the number of brokerage accounts in Russia doubled, from 10 to 20 million. And in 2022, another 9 million accounts on the stock market appeared in the country, follows from the statistics of the regulator.
But the main nuance is that most of the accounts are not actually used. 66 % remain empty, another 22 % of accounts contain assets worth less than 10 thousand rubles. The average amount of assets for the remaining 12 % of the accounts is 1.8 million rubles.
A poll of “Paper” does not allow us to judge which part of the readers now invest, but out of 142 people who answered questions, every third is engaged in investments or was engaged in every third.
The remaining respondents store savings in bank accounts, in the form of cash, invest in real estate and other alternative tools or have no savings.
Half of the respondents who invest in the stock market began to do this in 2020-2021. In 2019, 27 % of respondents began to invest before. Another 23 % of the survey participants among investors entered the stock market in 2022-2023.
The total cost of the investment portfolio in most respondents is from 100 thousand to a million rubles. Another 27 % of the respondents own assets in the amount of up to 100 thousand, and in 19 % of the participants in the survey, investment portfolios exceed 1 million rubles.
After the outbreak of war in Ukraine, foreign assets of many Russians were frozen due to the fact that European depositories EuroClear and Clearstream blocked the score of the Russian National Settlement Depository. According to Forbes , this is more than trillion rubles of private investors.
As a result, investments of citizens of the Russian Federation in foreign securities, declining in 2022, remained at the same level in 2023-simply because they cannot be sold.
Another popular option of investment is dollars and euros. The peak of demand for them in recent years has occurred in 2022, follows from the data of the Central Bank. Then purchases of dollars and euros in the Russian stock market exceeded sales by 885 billion rubles.
“Despite the exceeding the purchases of foreign currency over sales, the remains of currency in brokerage and bank accounts of individuals are reduced, since the purchased currency was mainly transferred to foreign accounts (including for payment of goods and services),” the Central Bank said.
Most often, bonds are found in the portfolios of Russian investors - in the second quarter of 2023, 39 % of all assets were on corporate and state securities of this format.
Unlike most Russian investors, our readers prefer shares bonds - less predictable assets without guaranteed profitability . They are bought by most respondents.
The second place in popularity among the participants in the Paper survey is occupied by exchange funds and currency. Only half of the respondents buys bonds, although several investors reported in detailed answers that they were building up their volume in their portfolios. The least popular option was cryptocurrency.
Most investors who answered our questions have certain foreign papers. In detailed answers, some readers indicated that they reduced the share of foreign assets, but it is impossible to sell all such papers due to their freezing against the background of the war.
About a third of the investors surveyed among readers of Papers said that their portfolio added in price during the war, the other third, on the contrary, lost part of the money, and the cost of investment portfolios remained at about the same level as in early 2022.
- I invest less, as the income has decreased. Sold foreign assets that he could. I reduced the share of Russian actions, because I think it is extremely risky. I moved to bonds and valuable metals. I use only Russian exchanges, since there is no access to others. I think about real estate investments.
- She began to invest less. Now you have to buy Russian promotions, although this is not bad: they are now quite cheap.
- Right before the start of the war, he began to invest at the Russian broker. Invested about 200 thousand rubles in exchange funds. After the start of the war, he began to invest on Interactive Brokers , I buy VT there. In the fall of 2022 he moved to another country: so far I stopped investing because there were many other expenses, but I plan to continue on Interactive Brokers after a while. I did not sell and do not plan promotions at the Russian [broker]. I expect that sooner or later foreign securities will unlock.
- I buy dollars more in case of emigration. Less - shares and assets in rubles.
- He sold most of the currency and shares, foreign funds. In the Russian market, he began to increase the share of bonds, as this is a less risky option. The portfolio practically stopped replenishing after the start of the war. I buy new positions from the payments of dividends and coupons.
- Foreign funds Finex were frozen: it is impossible to sell them, they just hang on the account, but in fact this money is no longer there. It was about 20 % of my savings. There are Russian promotions with a plus of up to 250 %, but this barely compensates for the losses on the funds.
- I sold shares of companies related to the state. I bought shares of independent enterprises. Since the beginning of the war, the portfolio size did not increase, as real incomes have been reduced, and there are no more free money for investment.
- I sold Russian actions, I buy only bonds and funds. I used to buy currency and crypt, but after the ruble exchange rate went down, I stopped buying the currency. I think to sell cryptocurrency.
- I stopped investing and gradually remove rubles taking into account the growth of the course.
- I use Russian exchanges, I buy only Russian promotions. It began to invest more, but took a course on investment in 2022. I gained knowledge that allowed to do this more structured and rely on the analysis of companies.
