Spanish football federation president resigns after kissing female soccer player

The president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, has resigned. This was reported on the official Twitter of the organization.

Rubiales himself wrote that he decided to leave the post of president of the federation because he was convinced that his departure would “contribute to stability.” However, he noted that he would not be able to return to this position.

At the end of August, the Spanish women's football team won the World Cup for the first time in history. During the awards ceremony, Rubiales kissed soccer player Jennifer Hermoso on the lips without permission. She later stated that she did not like what Rubiales did, but at that moment there was nothing she could do about it.

Madrid prosecutors later opened a sexual assault case against Rubiales, and FIFA suspended him. A few days later, Rubiales' mother Angeles Bejar locked herself in a church and went on a hunger strike because of the sanctions imposed on her son.
