The number of Russian military personnel willing to surrender has increased after a Russian pilot fled to Ukraine - GUR

After a Russian pilot flew a Mi-8 helicopter to Ukraine, the number of Russian military personnel willing to surrender increased by 70%. This was stated by the representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Andrey Yusov on Radio Liberty.

“There is a surge in the line “I want to live” separately and through other communication channels. After the successful Operation Sinitsa with the Mi-8 and the pilot, let’s say, the number of Russian Army servicemen who are considering a similar scenario for themselves has increased,” Yusov said.

At the end of August, it became known that a Russian Mi-8 helicopter landed at an airfield in the Kharkov region of Ukraine. Ukrainian intelligence then reported that the Russian pilot, “as a result of a long special operation,” deliberately took such a step, and his family was taken out of Russia in advance for this purpose. Two other crew members were reported to have been killed.

Later it became known that the pilot’s name was Maxim Kuzminov. He served in the 319th separate helicopter regiment of the Russian Army Aviation, military unit number 13984. According to Yusov, the pilot will receive 500 thousand dollars for the Russian helicopter. Kuzminov himself said at a press conference that he was first offered to transport the Mi-8 to Ukraine by Ukrainian police officers, and then representatives of Ukrainian intelligence contacted him.

The GUR project “I want to live” promises assistance to Russian military personnel who want to surrender safely. Allegedly, the Ukrainian side in this case guarantees their maintenance in accordance with the norms of the Geneva Convention.
