The instructors of the Syamozero camp, where 14 children died in 2016, were sentenced to up to six years in prison

The Petrozavodsk City Court sentenced Valery Krupoderschikov and Pavel Ilyin, instructors of the Syamozero camp, to six and five years in a general regime colony. They were accused of providing services that did not meet safety requirements, resulting in the death of two or more people (Part 3 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code), reports Interfax , citing the court’s press service. Their case was retried.

In March 2019, the court acquitted Valery Krupoderschikov of the provision of services that do not meet safety requirements, but found him guilty of leaving him in danger (125 of the Criminal Code). He was sentenced to eight years in prison in a penal colony, but was released after the statute of limitations had expired. Former instructor Pavel Ilyin, as well as the former head of the Rospotrebnadzor department for Karelia Anatoly Kovalenko and the acting head of this department Lyudmila Kotovich were acquitted . In June 2022, the Court of Cassation overturned the decision to acquit Krupoderschikov and Ilyin under Article 238 of the Criminal Code.

The tragedy occurred on June 18, 2016. That day, 47 children and four instructors from the Park-Hotel Syamozero camp went on a canoe trip and got caught in a storm. 14 children died and another 33 were injured. As wrote Meduza , Valery Krupoderschikov was in one of the boats, and Pavel Ilyin was not on the lake that day. The surviving children said that Krupoderschikov forbade them to contact emergency services when the boats they were sailing on began to capsize due to large waves.

In 2019, the ex-director of the camp, Elena Reshetova, and her deputy, Vadim Vinogradova, each received nine and a half years in a general regime colony. Vinogradov was the only one who admitted guilt. In May 2022, a court in Moscow found two former officials of the Department of Labor and Social Protection of the Moscow City Hall, Tatyana Barsukova and Elena Semkina, guilty of negligence and sentenced them to four and a half years in prison, but they escaped punishment due to the expiration of the statute of limitations . Ambulance paramedic Irina Shcherbakova, who answered a call from drowning children and took it as a joke, received three years in a penal colony.
