Member of the European Parliament from Germany Sergei Lagodinsky called on the European Commission to reconsider its explanations regarding the ban on the import of personal belongings into the EU by Russian citizens. He wrote about this in a letter addressed to the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. the text of the document . reviewed Meduza
“Such an interpretation is harmful from the point of view of the effectiveness of restrictive measures and is absolutely useless from the point of view of stopping Russian aggression,” it says.
Lagodinsky argues that the new clarifications, which prohibit the import of personal belongings and vehicles by Russian citizens into the EU, are “legally and politically erroneous.”
According to Lagodinsky, only those goods that can bring Russia significant income, which can then be used to continue the war, should be banned. He is convinced that the ban should not apply to the personal belongings of Russians.
In addition, Lagodinsky emphasized that it is impossible to confiscate things from Russians who permanently reside in the EU due to the fact that they are opponents of the Putin regime.
“These interpretations of restrictive measures discredit the institution of the embargo as a legitimate instrument of our policy, and us as a thoughtful legal system,” he wrote.
Previously, the European Commission issued clarifications, from which it follows that the sanctions restrictions include cars registered in Russia imported by Russians into the European Union, as well as personal items such as phones, laptops, cosmetics and clothing.
Later, the European Commission promised not to confiscate clothes from Russians in which they cross the border. “Clothing worn by a person crossing the border is unlikely to be intended to circumvent EU sanctions. I think this is common sense. This is a completely different situation than with an expensive car, and I think this is taken into account when EU member states apply sanctions,” European Commission spokesman Daniel Farry told Deutsche Welle.
