The court commuted the sentence of Zarema Musaeva

The Supreme Court of Chechnya commuted the sentence of the mother of Chechen oppositionists Zarema Musaeva to five years in a penal colony. The prosecutor requested this because of her health condition, reports Team Against Torture.

At the beginning of July 2023, Zarema Musayeva was sentenced to five and a half years in a general regime colony. The Akhmatovsky District Court of Grozny found her guilty of fraud and violence against a police officer.

On the day Musaeva’s verdict was announced, unknown persons severely beat Novaya Gazeta journalist Elena Milashina and lawyer Alexander Nemov, who had flown to Chechnya for the hearing. They also took away their equipment and threatened to kill them.

Milashina was going to fly to Chechnya to appeal the Musaeva case, but the other day she announced that she refused the trip, as it was risky for herself and those who were going to accompany her.
