Finland has completed a test section of the fence on the border with Russia

In South-East Finland, near the village of Pelkola, which borders Russia, the first section of the fence that separates the two countries has been completed. This was reported by the Finnish publication Yle.

The builders left the construction site. In addition to the fence, equipped with video surveillance, they built a road along the fence. Next, the area will be patrolled by the border service as usual.

Construction took longer than expected, border guard officer Ismo Kurki told Yle , as modifications had to be made to the project in August. Finnish border guards showed the first version of the fence in May - then it was lower and without barbed wire. The height of the fence is now four meters.

The construction of a three-kilometer test fence near the city of Imatra began in the spring. Yle wrote that at this site they are going to check whether the fence will withstand “winter frosts, snow loads or possible crowds of people arriving from the east.”

The Finnish border service first proposed building a fence in the fall of 2022, when mobilization was announced in Russia. Then, as Reuters wrote , 17 thousand Russians entered Finland over one weekend - 80% more than usual.

In total, the country plans to build approximately 200 kilometers of fence (the total length of the Russian-Finnish border is 1.3 thousand kilometers); about 70 kilometers of barriers will be erected next to border checkpoints and in the areas adjacent to them.
