Journalist Karen Shainyan was fined 30 thousand rubles due to the lack of “foreign agent” markings in his publications

The Basmanny District Court of Moscow fined journalist Karen Shainyan 30 thousand rubles in an administrative case. This was reported by a Mediazona correspondent.

Shainyan was found guilty of distributing materials without the “foreign agent” label (Part 4 of Article 19.34 of the Administrative Code). It is unknown for what publications a report was drawn up against the journalist.

The Ministry of Justice included him in the register of “foreign agents” in April 2022. The journalist has already been fined for not having the “foreign agent” label in his publications. It was also not reported then what became the reason for the administrative case.

Since 2020, the journalist has been running a YouTube channel with more than 200 thousand subscribers. The channel publishes interviews with LGBTQ+ representatives, and also publishes materials about the war in Ukraine.

In July of this year, Shainyan was added to the “list of terrorists and extremists” maintained by Rosfinmonitoring. This list includes those involved in cases involving extremist and terrorist offenses; the latter are included in the register with a special note.

Since the journalist does not have one, he is probably accused of an extremist article. Shainyan himself told Mediazona that he does not know what he is accused of. On August 18, he was added to the wanted list of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
