The US House of Representatives dismissed its speaker for the first time in history.

Members of the US House of Representatives voted to resign their speaker, Republican Kevin McCarthy. This is the first such case in the history of the country. This was reported by CNN.

216 congressmen voted for McCarthy's resignation, 210 voted against. The initiator of the vote was Republican Congressman from Florida Matthew Gaetz, who accused McCarthy of collaborating with the Democrats.

The reason for this was McCarthy's agreement with Democratic congressmen to adopt a budget resolution to finance federal spending for 45 days. This helped avoid a shutdown—a stop in the work of the country’s government.

“I will not seek to run again for Speaker of the House of Representatives. I may have lost today, but I fought for what I believe in, and I believe in America. It was an honor to serve,” commented on his resignation. McCarthy himself

Republican Patrick McHenry has become acting Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The position of Speaker of Congress is the third most important in the US political hierarchy. Previously, congressmen had never dismissed their speaker. The last unsuccessful attempt to do this was in 1910.
