“Twist the page of the tragedy and return to his usual way of life,”-this is how the Governor of the Kuban Veniamin Kondratyev said the day after the Su-34 aircraft fell on the residential high-rise building in Yeysk. In October 2022, 15 people were killed there, another six-year-old girl later died in the hospital. From the very beginning of the war, a quiet resort on the Azov coast turned into a strategically important city due to the presence of a large military airfield in it. Right opposite through the bay - Mariupol and Berdyansk. From there, the inhabitants heard explosions, and drones and rockets fly to the Yeisk area from the first days of hostilities. The correspondent of the “New tab” Valery Shuvostil and photographer Alina Testnichenko went to Yeysk and talked with the locals about the tragedy and life to the sounds “because of the ribbon”.
The quiet courtyards of multi -storey brick houses are surrounded by trees and benches hidden under them. Yeisk, although a resort city, is a sunny microdistrict - in total in the quarter from the local bus station - is not at all like the possession of thousands of tourists. The atmosphere here is more likely in the hens, which are in almost every city: old houses, a lot of greenery and pensioners.
In the evening of October 17, 2022, many residents of the house on the Communist Street have already returned to their apartments. In the windows of a long high -rise building of ten entrances standing, the lights began to light up one after another. It was silent on the street: someone else was purchased by groceries for dinner at the “magnet” at the house, and someone in the yard was waiting for the child from training-there was just a martial arts section in the basement of a high-rise building.
“It was about 18 hours,” recalls coach Alexei. - My group was standing, I noted everyone. The parent was still one, then she ran out and began to scream. And I already hear a “boom-boom”, as if something was shooting. I go out - a flame through the entire nine -story building from the other side. It shoots, but I do not understand what it is.

According to official figures, at 18:25, the Su-34 fighter-bomber fell on the house along the Communist Street, then half of the house, which went to the shopping center, covered fire. People screamed from the building. In neighboring high-rise buildings, the reaction was different: someone fell to the floor behind the wall, someone, on the contrary, ran from the apartment, the locals recalled in a conversation with a “new tab”.
- I was lying on the couch, the flame appeared, everyone raised with documents. It was scary, of course. The first thing they thought about was that they are bombing, ”the woman recalls at the neighboring house, from the windows of which the consequences of the crash were best seen. - She called her son, said to collect documents because they attacked us. Do not live people - they started a war.

While Andrei Malakhov spoke about the heroes of Donbass from the television screens, people burned alive in Yeysk. 16 people were killed, including four children. Later, it will inform the tragedy that the Su-34 fault was the cause of the tragedy: he collapsed down immediately after takeoff, overcoming only a few kilometers.
- There are such passions. They shouted there: “Help! Save! " They yelled like cut. There are heartbreaking screams. Do not give the Lord to anyone, ”recalls that day a pensioner Lyudmila, who lives in the surviving part of the house. - They show what is being done in Ukraine ... You see, they are also people. They are bombed, they burn, they are killed there. When will it end? I feel sorry for them, they are people, peaceful people, lived there for centuries. And here it is simply a war.
- They lived ... and even how they lived! - the neighbor picks up, turning away. “Better than us are a hundred times.” Prosperous.
In the third entrance of the house on the street of the Communist, the family of Ishchenko lived. In a three-room apartment on the seventh floor several generations huddled at once: 50-year-old spouses Galina and Alexander, their children-20-year-old Anton and 26-year-old Natalya, as well as three minor grandchildren: nine-year-old Vanya, eight-year-old Nina and five-year-old Kolya. Everyone died.
When the plane crashed into the building, the family, as the neighbors suggest, dinner. Immediately after the explosion, everyone was still alive, because the head of the family managed to call relatives and inform that they had nothing to breathe. It was not possible to get out due to the fact that the explosion destroyed the stairs. Soon, Alexander stopped responding to the calls of relatives.
A few years ago there was already a fire in the apartment. According to the neighbors, in one of the rooms the TV was injected, and he caught fire. Then the grandmother died, and Anton barely managed to endure - he was disabled. “Now fate has returned for everyone else,” the neighbors say.
The authorities promised to pay a million rubles for each deceased. But the native Ishchenko did not see seven million - they gave them only one. The elderly mother of 50-year-old Alexander received money for the death of her son, and her daughter-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the Kuban government did not recognize as close relatives (although by law the grandchildren also relate to them), which means that it did not pay compensations for their death.

Local journalists noted that in the resolution of Governor Kondratyev, almost 15 million rubles were laid for the payment of lump -sum benefits to relatives of the dead (according to each deceased). Where part of the funds went, if Ishchenko received only one instead of seven million, is unknown.
In April, Alexander Ishchenko, Alexander Ishchenko, told the “Vilestka” that the resulting million was enough for seven monuments. He and his mother did not receive payment for the apartment either: she was not privatized. In an interview with the journalist of the New tab, Andrei Ishchenko said that after six months the situation with payments and compensations did not change, so there is nothing to discuss here. However, he still filed a lawsuit against the Ministry of Defense, but does not hope too much for a positive outcome.
The inhabitants of Yeysk heard the first explosions two days after the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine. Later they found a huge funnel in the field-presumably, it fell by shells that fired at the ship walking along the bay in Rostov-on-Don. The chairman of the TFR, Alexander Bastrykin, even instructed to initiate a criminal case. Since then, the explosions of the inhabitants have been heard regularly. It's all about the intimacy of the war zone and in a large military airfield located almost in the city.
A local resident Olga, who is actively interested in the problems of the city, says that in Yeysk no one pays attention to military aircraft: their hum has become a daily background. Even “arrivals” do not scare anyone, not counting the particularly impressionable.
-More, you know, now some kind of folk amusement resembles in chats. “I sneezed”, “the bubble [the head of the Yeisk region] applaud”, “it slammed in your head” and so on, ”the woman says.

Yeysk is a city between the same name by the Liman and Taganrog Bay of the Sea of Azov. More than 90 thousand people live here, which makes Yeysk the fifth largest city in the Krasnodar Territory. And from here to Mariupol is only 60 kilometers, to Bakhmut - two hundred in a straight line. The proximity to Ukraine always liked the local residents: in Soviet times, the Taganrog Gulf even ran a ferry. It was possible to go to the neighbors for shopping, because “Ukrainians always lived richer,” recall the Yeisk pensioners.
- In the Soviet years, there was a ferry in Mariupol, but now it is not, although over time, maybe it will be. We went to Mariupol for things, they had the most, they lived better, ”one of the pensioners on a bench at the injured house tells the new tab to the new tab.
Now, the location of the city is beneficial not only to its inhabitants who have lived together for years with neighbors on the other side of the border. Fighters and freight aircraft constantly fly from Yeysk to Ukraine - they say that sometimes they rise into the sky every half an hour in batches of several pieces at once.

The training airfield of the Navy has been operating in Yeysk since 1931. For almost a century it was used to teach pilots. In the 2010s, they wanted to reconstruct the air harbor so that it could accept civil flights-they were going to build a gambling zone with the Azov City casino near Yeisk. But neither the other projects were implemented.
Since 2011, the pilots left the airfield - they were redistributed to other cities to reconstruct the facility. As the New Gazeta wrote with reference to aviation experts, in 2014 a new runway was handed over at the airport-four of them became four. The strip with a length of 3.5 kilometers practically rested against the residential quarters of the city, since during the existence of the Yeisk airfield, it significantly grew.
Local residents say that the airfield began to actively use the “year three ago”.
- Immediately a military airfield, bomb him [to any enemies] will be a joy. When there was a Chechen war, they also aimed at him, because airplanes took off from here. The flight school was here, good and the oldest, here came here from different countries to study. Three years ago, his [airfield] was opened again, ”says the interlocutor of the“ new tab ”, who has been living in Yeysk all her life.
The city itself, being on the outskirts of the Krasnodar Territory, lives mainly at the expense of tourists. It is closer to Central Russia than the resorts of the Black Sea coast, so the place is popular. Especially among Muscovites and Petersburgers. Moreover, the vacation here saves up to 15 hours of way in one direction - it will be so much required to get to Sochi in summer traffic jams.
According to official figures, from May to September 2022, 766 thousand people rested in the Yeisk district. About the same amount comes from now every year, not counting the coiva of the 2020th. During the summer of 2023, 374 thousand people stayed in the hotels of the Yeisk district, there are no statistics for the whole season yet.
That's just the locals themselves say that in recent years tourists have become much smaller. Most of all, the wave of vacationers crushed Covid. When the stream of people began to return, the war in Ukraine began. According to the memoirs of the locals, at the start of the 2022 season there was almost no one in the city. Tourists were either afraid, or just less money.
- The best rest in the Krasnodar Territory is Yeisk. The best vacation in the Russian Federation is Yeisk. The best rest in the post -Soviet space, and all over the world is Yeysk, - lists Rustam, a souvenir merchant on the central beach of the city. - And seriously, it’s hard now. People became poorer. War, fear. Last year there was nobody at all, at first they were afraid of this, then it became more. And there we'll see. We live in such a world ...
The main advantage of relaxation in the Yeisk district is cheaper here than in other places. In 2023, Turkspert Yuri Kuznetsov said that in separate locations, rest in the Azov and Black Seas has risen in price by more than 30%over the year. At the same time, prices decreased only in Crimea and Yeysk - an average of 7-17%.

Residents of the city recall that in the Soviet years there were several dozen factories in Yeysk: furniture, confectionery, canned, shoe and sewing factories and others. Now almost everyone was either closed or re -profiled. For example, a sewing factory still works - sometimes in newspapers you can find announcements of vacancies. The production of concrete mixtures, facing bricks, attractions and components for them, as well as beer and bread, have also been preserved. And in the city there are still a port, machine-tool and aviation repair plants, the Azov shipbuilding company. According to the district administration, in 2022, more than 49 thousand people were occupied in the city’s economy, and the average salary amounted to 40.1 thousand rubles. Many can argue with this.
- Salaries are not enough, but pathologically low. With the work, in my opinion, it became even worse than it was, ”the local resident Olga argues.
Young people from the city either leave or work in the service sector: shops, cafes, hotels. But some global changes did not feel some global changes after February 24: life day after day flows exactly the same way as they flowed before the war, only everything has risen in price. And the planes sometimes scare when they fly low above residential buildings.
And in the area, drones periodically fall, but people are already used to them. Like everything else. “Airplanes both flew and fly. Emotionally worried at first, but now you don’t even think about it. If fate is so fate, you can’t do anything already, ”says one of the passers -by, with whom the“ new tab ”managed to talk.
Maria lives in Yeysk and rents rooms in a small house. She agreed only on the phone, because she was personally afraid to frighten off the already few visitors. According to the woman, for two years now the tourist season begins in mid -July and ends in early September. Although before it was longer: from late May to mid -September. Maria explains this by the fact that people are looking at and watching the situation at the beginning of the season: is it dangerous here, is there any arrival.
Immediately, Maria recovered and declares that in general people are not afraid to go to Yeysk, because nothing happens here. The warm fine sea is ideal for relaxing with children, and in September you can come to those who like to retire: the beaches are usually already empty. According to Maria's observations, Muscovites are very fond of the city. At least they stop at her often.
Back in 2018, experts called the Sea of Azov the most dirty in Russia and the CIS countries. As in other reservoirs of the country, industrial drains and chemicals from the fields are dumped there. And the mines of the Donetsk region have a huge impact. Since the sea itself is very small and small, all these factors greatly affect the environmental situation.

After the start of the war in the Mariupol region, people were forbidden to swim in the Sea of Azov because of the min. However, many believed that this was due to the cholera. However, such prohibitions were before the war: in 2021, on the Azov coast of the Krasnodar Territory,he was banned from entering the water because of microbes that appeared in water after rains and flooding.
“I have two students, I am a cook with a salary of 20 thousand.” We have to walk and sell corn and tubes to earn. There are many tourists from May to September, but this year the weather is not very good. And so in the city there is nothing to do, there is no work, instead of the plants "magnets" and "penterrot". All [the rest] was closed, ”says Galina, who walks along the beach with a bag of food, and now stopped at a smoke break.

The locals themselves could not decide whether there were more tourists or not. Someone says that in 2023, the stream began to return: everyone was already used to the war, and on the Black Sea constant floods that scare away. But one thing is clear: the situation has not returned to the underly times and in the coming years it is not worth expecting this.
Crimea now also has ceased to be a competitor to Yeisk after explosions on the bridge and permanent attacks. Firstly, it has become more difficult to get more and longer due to the checkpoint. Secondly, explosions and arrivals scare people. This is also confirmed by statistics : this year in Crimea there were almost half as much vacationers than in the past.
In a small bakery a few blocks from the injured house, the saleswoman Elena offers to buy yesterday's ring with cream. The woman says that she moved from the Far East and has been living in Yeysk for many years. When there was a disaster with the Su-34, she could not even approach the house and put flowers on a spontaneous memorial. Elena is still difficult to be next to this place. Passing by a minibus, she always turns to the side.
Elena, according to her, it is a pity for the tears of the victims of the Years tragedy, but at the same time she is ready to go to the front at any moment if the homeland demands. In the case of mobilization, a woman and her friends were already secretly agreed to go to the nurses. Moreover, she does not plan to leave anywhere, even though her daughter called to Moscow, and relatives - to Georgia.
- When everything began, it was banged either in Dolzhanka, then in Shirochaka (we are talking about explosions and huge funnels in the fields), the panicians immediately yelled. My daughter in Moscow torn the phone.

We said goodbye to this.

It didn't work out.
