The International Olympic Committee has revoked the powers of the Russian Olympic Committee until further notice. The reason for this was the decision of the ROC to include the Olympic councils of the occupied regions in its composition.
“The unilateral decision adopted by the ROC on October 5, 2023 to include regional sports organizations under the jurisdiction of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine (namely the Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporozhye regions) constitutes a violation of the Olympic Charter, since it violates the territorial the integrity of the NOC of Ukraine, recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in accordance with the Olympic Charter,” says the IOC press release.
The suspension means the ROC is no longer eligible to act as a national Olympic committee or receive funding from the IOC. They noted that the ROC reserves the right to decide on the participation of individual athletes with Russian citizenship in the Olympic Games in a neutral status.
The ROC stated that the IOC “reinforced de jure what was done de facto back in February 2022”: “This step does not affect Russian athletes, the vast majority of whom are still groundlessly excluded from international performances.” .
