Opposition coalition could win majority of seats in Polish parliament

In Poland, the ruling Law and Justice party won the parliamentary elections, but three opposition parties - the Civic Coalition, the Third Way and the New Left - could form a coalition and win a majority of seats in parliament.

If a coalition is formed, then, according to experts, Warsaw’s internal politics could change significantly. The country can legalize abortion and simplify the transgender transition, while Poland will most likely continue to provide military and economic assistance to Ukraine. The results of the past elections were published by the newspaper Rzeczpospolita.

Thus, after counting all the ballots, the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) gained just over 35%. Thus, the party of the conservative Jaroslaw Kaczynski will receive 194 seats in the Sejm. Their potential allies in the far-right Confederation of Freedom and Independence party, which opposes aid to Ukraine, were supported by only 7% of voters, which could give them 18 more seats.

The opposition coalition, which could take 248 seats in parliament, consists of three parties: the Civic Coalition, led by former Prime Minister and ex-head of the European Council Donald Tusk, the Third Way and the New Left. At the same time, the turnout in the elections was more than 74% - this is a record since 1989.

Donald Tusk, on Sunday evening, when the first results of the exit polls became known, promised to improve relations between Warsaw and Brussels, reverse the reforms carried out by PiS, and also bring its leaders to justice. “Democracy has won. This is the end of the PiS government,” Tusk told party members on Sunday evening.

During the election campaign, Tusk stated that his party has ready-made projects that will help legalize abortions up to the 12th week and same-sex civil partnerships in the country.

According to Reuters, a potential pro-European coalition led by Tusk will have to wait weeks or even months to form a government. Polish President Andrzej Duda, who is an ally of PiS, said that he would give the first attempt to form a government to the party that received the majority of votes. If they fail to do this, the opposition will be able to propose its own version of the cabinet.
