“In general, I don’t really understand what’s going on. My lawyer is not there, all the other lawyers are not there, no one comes to see me. On Friday evening I received information that there were searches, yesterday I received information that three lawyers were arrested. Of course, these are flagrant and lawless actions - so demonstrably lawless,” Navalny said.
“Currently, to be honest, I don’t really understand what my position should be on this court and on all the others. So I inform the court, for example, that today the Investigative Committee sent me a dispatch that they would urgently carry out some investigative actions with my participation, with a wonderful and mocking addition: “If you do not have a lawyer, please take some action to find a lawyer,” he added.
At the same time, Navalny emphasized that he could not take any action, since he was completely cut off from the outside world. “And what actions can I take when I don’t even understand what’s going on with my lawyers, no one is allowed to see me, I’m completely isolated from information. And thanks to you personally, I don’t even have a radio. Even on radio Mayak I cannot hear what is happening in our country,” he explained.
Navalny called what was happening to his lawyers “lawlessness” and emphasized that they were being persecuted for their professional activities.
At the same time, he said that he stopped working with lawyer Alexei Liptser, who was arrested on October 13, because he could not regularly travel from Moscow to Kovrov due to the birth of a child. Navalny also recalled that the other two arrested lawyers also have children, Sergunin has one, and Kobzev has three.
“I hope that the legal community is not silent, this is generally some kind of demonstrative lawlessness. These people…” Navalny said, after which his sound and video were turned off, and journalists in the courtroom stopped seeing and hearing him.
On October 13, Moscow's Basmanny Court arrested three of Alexei Navalny's lawyers - Igor Sergunin, Vadim Kobzev and Alexey Liptser - on charges of participating in an “extremist community.” The reason was that they allegedly transferred documents from Navalny from the colony to his associates.
On October 16, another defender of Navalny, who was supposed to represent him at the current trial in the Kovrovsky court, Alexander Fedulov, stopped communicating. He later wrote on his Instagram that he was forced to leave Russia.
Another Navalny lawyer, Olga Mikhailova, is also outside Russia.
On October 16, Russian lawyers called on their colleagues to go on strike. The reason for this call was the arrest of Navalny’s lawyers. At the time of publication of this note, the petition had already been signed by 144 Russian lawyers.
