First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Andrei Belousov presented a classification of types of businesses in Russia, which was invented by an acquaintance of his in the 1990s. Belousov spoke about this while speaking at the “Made in Russia” forum, dedicated to the topic “Unicorns in the markets of the future,” writes Kommersant.

Belousov said that in the early 1990s, his “close friend gave an excellent classification of types of businesses” in Russia, which the First Deputy Prime Minister himself, in his words, still applies “with success.”

“There are three types - “rat”, “grunt” and “hoof”. “Rat” means they swooped in, ate it, and ran to another pile. “Grunt” is when there is a trough, and everyone crouches down to it for a long time and drives each other away. And “hoofing” is when a deer gets a piece of moss from under the ice, knocks for a long time, picking it out, and so on,” Belousov said.

The First Deputy Prime Minister noted that in this classification the word “unicorn” “does not and cannot exist.” “The success story of the “unicorn” is not even about the fact that the technological Cinderella married a prince. This is about how the technological Cinderella became the king's mother-in-law. This is the next piece of history that should be there [in the classification].

“Unicorns” are technology startups with a capitalization of one billion dollars or more.
