The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and Israel and the release of the hostages. Its project was submitted by Jordan on October 26 ( .pdf ), and was joined by 40 countries, including Russia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

Although the resolution's sponsors begin by "condemning all acts of violence against Palestinian and Israeli civilians," much of the document is devoted to criticism of Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip. Canada tried ( .pdf ) to add a paragraph to the text condemning Hamas attacks and taking prisoners, but its amendment did not receive the required number of votes.

Representatives of 120 countries voted “for”, 14 voted “against”, including Israel itself, the USA, Austria and the Czech Republic. 45 countries abstained.
