Russia could force Ukrainian prisoners of war to join its volunteer formation - ISW

Russia is likely forcing Ukrainian prisoners of war to join its volunteer force to fight in the war against Ukraine. This was reported by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

At the end of October, Russian state media reported that the Russian volunteer battalion "Bogdan Khmelnytsky" recruited about 70 Ukrainian prisoners of war who were in various Russian colonies. They began to prepare to be sent to the front line.

The Institute for the Study of War called this a violation of the Geneva Prisoners of War Convention. It prohibits sending or holding prisoners of war in a combat zone where they might come under fire. Also, prisoners of war cannot be involved in work that could cause harm to life and health.
