Suspect in Maine shooting of 18 people found dead in US

US Army reservist Robert Card, suspected of killing 18 people in Maine, has been found dead. this CNN reports with reference to a government source.

Card's body was found around 7:45 p.m. Friday near the Androscoggin River, not far from the recycling center where he was recently fired, the newspaper reported. Card died because he shot himself, CNN notes. Maine Governor Janet Mills said the news left her "breathing a sigh of relief, knowing that [...] Card is no longer a threat to anyone."

Robert Card, 40, opened fire on people at the Schemengees Bar & Grille and Sparetime Recreation bowling alley in Lewiston on October 26th. As a result, 18 people were killed and another 13 were injured. Previously, 22 deaths were reported.

According to the Associated Press, Card spent several weeks in a mental hospital in the summer of 2023. A bulletin sent to police across the country following his attacks said he was taken to hospital after "hearing voices" and threatening to carry out a shooting at a military base.
