16-year-old Iranian Armita Geravand died after she was detained by the “morality police” in early October for not wearing a hijab. Soon after this, the girl fell into a coma. Her death was reported by Reuters, citing the Iranian state agency IRNA.

“Unfortunately, Gheravand fell into a coma for some time due to brain damage and died a few minutes ago,” the agency quotes Reuters.

Police detained Geravand in the Tehran metro on October 1. The Iranian-Kurdish human rights organization Hengaw reported that this happened with the use of force by security forces. The reason was the girl’s lack of a hijab: she walked with her head uncovered, which is a violation of the laws in force in Iran. The morality police took her to the hospital in critical condition. On October 5, it became known that Geravand fell into a coma. Iranian authorities say she was injured when she fainted and hit her head.

In September 2022, Iran was gripped by large-scale protests that escalated into clashes with security forces. The reason was the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died after being severely beaten by security forces who detained her for “incorrectly” wearing a hijab. Despite the massive scale, the Iranian authorities brutally suppressed the protests. According to Iranian human rights activists, tens of thousands of protesters were detained, hundreds were killed in clashes with security forces, seven were executed, and another ten were given death sentences that have not yet been carried out.

In September 2023, Iranian authorities seriously tightened penalties for violating the Islamic dress code, as well as “promoting nudity.”
