Mother of slain Iranian protester sentenced to 13 years in prison for 'blasphemy' and 'insulting Iran's supreme leader'

In Iran, Mahsa Yazdani, the mother of Javad Zahedi Sarawi, who was killed during protests in 2022, was sentenced to 13 years in prison. this . reports The Independent

Yazdani's lawyer, Maysam Mousavi, said Yazdani was given five years for "blasphemy", another five years for "incitement", two years for "insulting the Supreme Leader of Iran" and one year for "disseminating propaganda against the regime". She will not be eligible for parole for the first five years.

Yazdani was detained in August for expressing solidarity with the families of those killed during the 2022 nationwide protests. They flared up after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was detained for “incorrectly” wearing a hijab.

Yazdani's son, 20-year-old Mohammad Javad Zahedi, was allegedly killed by security forces during anti-regime protests in the northern city of Saree last September. His mother, including through social networks, tried to achieve fair punishment for those who killed her son.
