There are about 600 Russians in the Gaza Strip awaiting evacuation to Egypt, said Russian Ambassador to Israel Anatoly Viktorov.
“We are actively working with the Egyptian authorities in order to remove <...> about 600 Russian citizens and a little more than 300 citizens of other countries, our neighbors, mainly CIS countries. We are in active contact, we are ready. As soon as the crossing is opened for our citizens, we will do it all,” RIA Novosti quotes his words said on air on the Zvezda TV channel.
According to Viktorov, the Russian authorities are waiting for a signal from their Egyptian colleagues when it will be possible to evacuate the Russians through the Rafah checkpoint. After this, diplomats from Cairo will be sent to assist in the evacuation, and buses and planes will be used.
The Rafah checkpoint opened for the evacuation of people the day before, this happened for the first time since the start of the war. On the same day, the first seriously wounded Palestinians were brought to Egypt from Gaza . The checkpoint also works to receive humanitarian aid for residents of the enclave.
