Police officers insulted a Moscow resident because of his nationality and broke his jaw in front of his pregnant wife.

In Moscow, police beat local resident Tamerlan Marzoev in front of his pregnant wife, and forced him to do squats naked at the police station. The conflict arose on ethnic grounds, reports Team Against Torture.

In mid-October, Marzoev and his wife Aryuna were returning from friends late at night. They were stopped by police who did not introduce themselves and immediately demanded to see their documents.

“He started asking me where I was from. I replied that I had been living in Moscow since the seventh grade and that I was a native of North Ossetia. At that moment, the employee said: “Why did you come here in droves?” Marzoev recalls.

According to him, his wife did not like the talk about nationality and she began to quarrel with the police. When Marzoev blocked her from the security officer, one of the police officers hit him in the jaw several times, writes Team Against Torture. Marzoev fell on the asphalt and hit his head.

The couple was taken to the Timiryazevsky district police station. There, according to Marzoev, the security forces continued to insult him because of his nationality and tested him for drugs. “The operative started asking me what I was using, and then told me to strip naked and sit down three times. I complied with his demand,” Marzoev told human rights activists.

From the department, the police took Marzoev to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a bilateral jaw fracture and numerous bruises on his head. He was left in the hospital, and a few days later he underwent surgery. Marzoev, according to the Team Against Torture, has still not recovered and cannot work.

Marzoev’s lawyers filed statements about the crime to the Koptevsky Interdistrict Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee and to the Main Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee for Moscow. In addition, they demand that an internal audit be carried out against the police officers, and that recordings from video cameras from the police department, lapel video recorders and the car recorder be preserved.
