In Russia, for the first time, a training program for “media police” was launched. This type of bachelor’s degree is now available at RANEPA, Izvestia reports , citing the university’s press service. “Media police” will “identify manifestations of extremism and crimes against individuals on social networks, and will also have methods for blocking pirated content.”
The official name of the direction is “Media support of state interests and national security.” “The tasks of “media security” include combating the propaganda of terrorism, the ideology of criminal culture, suicide among teenagers, and insulting the feelings of believers,” said the head of the new department, Lidia Malygina. She clarified that the program is being implemented with the support of the National Anti-Terrorism Committee.
Izvestia notes that upon completion of training, “media police” will receive one of the specializations: investigation of offenses against citizens (cyberbullying, stalking), legal entities (piracy) or the state (extremism).
The RANEPA website states that the department’s activities are aimed at implementing the tasks of “state policy in the field of ensuring national security”, such as “state and public security”, “information security”, “protection of traditional Russian spiritual and moral values, culture and historical memory” .
Among the prerequisites for the creation of the department, the need of the state and society for specialists who can support state interests in the media and “promote the values of the Russian world”, “resist destructive information flows” aimed at discrediting Russia and its army, “cancel” Russian culture, “propaganda” is indicated Russophobia and other types of extremism.” The prerequisites for the creation of the department also state that an information war is being waged against Russia, during which a “systemic crisis in journalistic education” and a shortage of specialists “sharing patriotic values” have emerged.
